To celebrate its 10th birthday Gallery 57 is showing the work of ten artists it feels has played key roles in influencing the direction of its curated exhibitions.

For this poignant exhibition I have chosen to include key pieces that reflect an evolution of artworks over the last ten years. From early simple tactile bowl forms that rest on burned or weathered wood grounds; a considered balance of volume, surface, shadow and detail….to sculptural vessels that hold presence and contemplation within their enigmatic forms, raw openings and sutured skins…what is within, what is without…to more recent pieces that explore a further sense of containment and closure through coiled and woven detail.

Simplicity of form and tactility of surface echo ancient artefacts and ritual practices whilst holding contemporary resonance, where material presence is balanced with fragility and impermanence. All emerge slowly, intuitively, over time…traversing ground…
